My dad always used to change his oil often too. IMO use a quality oil and change at specified interval. Spend the money you save on getting the oil analysed every 2-3 changes. My old mk3 petrol had 230k on it when sold and is still going and that was 2 years ago. Always changed at 12.5k and was fine.
