The much anticipated F800R Sport Roadster joined the F800 Series lineup this fall, debuting as a 2010 model in September with an MSRP of $9,990. The heart of the new F800R is the now familiar 798cc parallel twin shared within the F800 family, rated at 87 bhp @ 8,000 rpm while delivering 86 Nm of torque @ 6,000 rpm.
Though the 8-valve parallel twin remains the same, a modified fuel-injection system combined with major improvements to the exhaust raises the power output from 87bhp to 90bhp, a noticeable difference from the seat. The new fuel-injection system results in a finely tuned throttle that offers a glorious balance of precision and buttery versatility.
On my ride, after 80 miles the fuel gauge wasn’t even at half empty. The gearing is spot on for this kind of bike and the style of riding it’s designed for. First gear revs out at 60mph, second at 80mph and third at 105mph. In top gear, the F800R will cruise comfortably at 80mph showing 5,500rpm, with another 3,000rpm to go before you hit
The R is very flickable and stable in the corners, LOVE the 800 motor, lots of torque, but revs nice too. The F80R reminded me of a Ducati monster for feel. If I were to buy a new BMW today it would be an 800, the R is a nice bike, but I think I would probably opt for the GS or ST, for the wind protection reasons only.
